This illustration is based on Borgund Stave Church in Lærdal Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The real life church is a stunning sight, built with wooden boards coated with tar. The church was built sometime between 1180 and 1250, after the end of the Viking age, but still owes a lot of its inspiration and craftsmanship to the Vikings.
My illustration is a playful take on this church, and the exterior is loosely based on it, with cartoon and ornamental elements added.
